RestUp
vs Gentler Streak

Two gentle apps with no account and no guilt. Gentler Streak is built around how you move, and tells you how much to do today. RestUp is built around how you rest, and tells you what last night means for today.

The short answer
Gentler Streak if workouts are the centre: a tracker, suggestions and a streak that allows rest.
RestUp if sleep is the centre: sleep debt, chronotype and tonight’s plan, on iPhone or Android.
Gentler Streak, centred on movement
“For those of us who want to move consistently, not constantly.”
Its App Store listing
  • Activity Path, a healthy range for training
  • Daily workout suggestions
  • A full Apple Watch workout tracker
RestUp, centred on rest
Where they agree

Kindred apps, honestly.

If you like one, there is a good chance you will like the other.
  • No account. Gentler Streak says “No user accounts. No servers.” and analyses health data on the iPhone.
  • Rest counts. Gentler Streak’s streak “celebrates rest”; RestUp’s line is “rest is strength”.
  • A daily read of your HRV, heart rate and sleep against your own normal range.
  • Both read Apple Health, and both have iPhone widgets.
In the app

Where RestUp is different.

Sleep is the main screen, not a section.

Every night gets a sleep score out of 100, its stages around the clock, and a line in plain words: rested, 7h 51m, woke up three times. Last night’s sleep stays free after your first week.

Gentler StreakTracks sleep with stages and a rating of Poor, Fair, Good or Excellent. Its full sleep analysis is part of Premium.
RestUp Sleep: Rested, 7h 51m, woke up 3 times. Sleep score 98 of 100, 10:47 pm to 7:12 am.

Sleep debt, and your chronotype.

RestUp keeps a seven-night sleep debt and reads your chronotype from your recorded nights, then uses both to suggest when to wind down tonight.

Gentler StreakWe could not find sleep debt or chronotype in its help centre or App Store listing.
RestUp chronotype: Bear. Usual bedtime 10:30 pm, usual wake 6:30 am.

What your workouts do to your nights.

RestUp reads your walks and workouts and checks them against your own sleep and readiness: on your hike days, did anything change? It says so when nothing did, and that a pattern is not proof. Workout pages are part of RestUp Plus.

Gentler StreakGoes further on the workout itself: it weighs recent workouts and your recovery into the Activity Path, and suggests what to do today.
RestUp Morning hike: 1h 18m, 6.3 km. On your hike days, last 60 days: no clear difference in how fast you fell asleep, readiness, HRV, resting heart or breathing. These went together in your own data. That doesn’t prove one caused the other.

On Android too.

RestUp runs on Android and reads any watch that writes to Health Connect, with the same readings, all computed on your phone.

Gentler StreakLists iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. We found no Android version.
RestUp on Android, Today: Your body is ready for a steady day, 78 of 100, recovering well.
In fairness

If you move a lot, Gentler Streak does far more for it.

And if you would rather not see a daily number at all, Gentler Streak is built that way on purpose. Its co-founder: “We avoid putting your daily form into a score, percentage, or body battery concept.”

  • A workout tracker on the watch with 140+ activity types, heart rate zones and GPS.
  • Cycle-aware guidance, and Sick, Injured and On a Break statuses.
  • 2024 Apple Design Award for Social Impact, and 2022 Apple Watch App of the Year.
  • 4.7 stars from about 8,800 US App Store ratings, and Family Sharing plans.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Gentler Streak if

Moving is what you want help with: how much to do today, a workout to start from your wrist, and a streak that forgives a rest day. Or if you would rather never see a score.

Pick RestUp if

Sleep is what you want help with: last night in plain words, your sleep debt, your chronotype and a plan for tonight. Or if you are on Android. The two do different jobs, so using both is reasonable.
