whoop alternatives for apple watch
If you own an Apple Watch, the case for a Whoop is weaker than it used to be: recovery, sleep debt and HRV baselines are all available as apps, without a second wearable, a second charger or a yearly membership. This list is written by the maker of one of them, so it is in alphabetical order and links to every product's own pages. Prices were checked on 12 September 2026 and may change.
What Whoop actually does that an app cannot
Before the list, the honest caveat. Whoop is a dedicated sensor worn all day with no screen, which gives it a continuous Strain score and, on its higher tiers, health monitoring that reads from its own hardware. It cannot use an Apple Watch as its sensor at all, has no Watch app or complications, requires an account and a membership at $199 to $359 a year including the band, and stores your data in its cloud. If continuous strain from a screenless band is the thing you want, none of the apps below replace it. If what you want is a morning recovery reading from the watch you already wear, all of them do.
The realistic options
Athlytic
Best if: you train to a plan and want a daily exertion target next to your recovery.
- Apple Watch, on-device via Apple Health, no account; App Store label: Data Not Collected.
- Recovery 0–100 % from HRV and resting heart rate against a 60-day baseline; Exertion 0–10; sleep debt; 8+ complications.
- $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, 7-day trial, no lifetime option.
The closest like-for-like Whoop replacement for athletes. Reviewers note the recovery model favours cardio over strength work. Our full comparison: RestUp vs Athlytic, linked below.
AutoSleep
Best if: you want to pay once and never think about a subscription again.
- Apple Watch, no account, no data upload to any server; App Store label: Data Not Collected.
- Readiness as Low to Optimal or 1–5 stars from HRV and waking pulse; Sleep Rating 1–100; Sleep Bank for debt and credit; sleeping HRV added in late 2025.
- $8.99 one time. No trial, no subscription.
The veteran of the category, with about 62,000 US ratings. Its readiness is coarser than a 0–100 score, and reviewers describe the settings as overwhelming. No chronotype.
Bevel
Best if: you want recovery, strain, nutrition and strength in one dashboard, with a free tier.
- Apple Watch via Apple Health, plus Garmin, Oura and Fitbit direct. Account required.
- Recovery 1–100 % against a 60-day baseline that takes two to six weeks; sleep score; Sleep Bank; strain; stress; AI coach on the paid tier.
- Core features free; Pro $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
Biometrics are stored locally by default, but the AI coaching goes to the cloud and the privacy label lists identifiers used to track you. Broad, and by some accounts overwhelming. In March 2026 Whoop sued Bevel's maker in federal court in Delaware, alleging patent, copyright and trade dress infringement; as far as public records show, the case is unresolved.
Gentler Streak
Best if: you want activity guidance in a calm voice and do not need a number at all.
- Apple Watch, no account, no servers; Apple Watch App of the Year 2022 and an Apple Design Award in 2024.
- A qualitative Daily Readiness and Activity Path rather than a numeric score; sleep rated Good to Excellent; vitals shown against your own range.
- Free tier; Premium $8.99 a month, $39.99 a year, or a lifetime option.
The gentlest app here, and the closest to RestUp in temperament. If you want a number, reviewers say so too: there is not one.
RestUp
Best if: you want one plain-words readiness reading each morning, a chronotype, and nothing leaving your phone.
- Apple Watch (or Android through Health Connect), computed on your phone, no account, no ads; anonymous opt-out app analytics only.
- Readiness 0–100 with the method published; sleep score; 7-night sleep debt ledger; chronotype and social jet lag; HRV against a 14-night baseline; Watch app, complications and widgets.
- First week free, then RestUp Plus; the current price is on the App Store or Google Play listing.
This is our app, so discount the enthusiasm. It is new, has few ratings yet, and deliberately shows less than the others. It is the only app on this list with a chronotype reading, and the only one that documents its score line by line.
RISE
Best if: sleep debt and an energy schedule matter more to you than a recovery score.
- Works phone-only or with an Apple Watch, Oura, Fitbit or Garmin. Account required; data stored in the US.
- Sleep debt and sleep need are the core; a circadian energy curve with peaks and dips; no readiness or recovery score by design, and no chronotype label.
- $69.99 a year, 7-day trial that auto-renews.
Owns the phrase sleep debt and does it well. It is also the app with the most complaints about trial auto-charges and cancellation in the sources we checked, so set a reminder before day seven.
And Apple itself
From watchOS 26, every Apple Watch from Series 6 onwards has a built-in Sleep Score. From September 2026, the Series 12 and Ultra 4 also get a native Readiness score from 0 to 10 with recovery HRV against a personal baseline. If you own one of those two watches, try Apple’s version first; it is free. Older watches do not get it, and no Apple Watch has a sleep debt or a chronotype reading. The Apple Readiness guide goes into the detail.
How to choose in one paragraph
Want a number and a training target: Athlytic. Want to pay once: AutoSleep. Want everything in one place and a free tier: Bevel. Want no numbers: Gentler Streak. Want sleep debt and an energy schedule without a watch: RISE. Want one calm sentence, a chronotype and nothing in the cloud: RestUp. All of them are cheaper than a year of Whoop, and four of the six run on your existing watch with no account.
